[ Dejection feels like a weight against her chest, because Kaji isn't leaving to concede. He is leaving because whatever else happens next no longer concerns him, and he no longer believes her vehemence will yield anything of importance, let alone a miracle, nothing worth witnessing. He is leaving because she has disappointed him, any number of ways that have added up to this.

Her face betrays the fear, a momentary shift to surprise, mouth agape before she purses her lips to keep her frown at bay, turning to shoot Bellamy a sharp look instead. She makes no move to remove his hand from her shoulder, because she shouldn't move her hands from around Shinji.

The impromptu superstition has her believing that if she holds on firm enough that the boy would come back, like last time, that if she never lets her mind stray away from the thought of saving him, he would be back, like last time. She doesn't miss a note of Gildor's performance, because every single one could be the very one that calls Shinji back. And it shouldn't matter, but she doesn't take her eyes off of the bard either, placing her hope for a connection on an unbroken gaze on his unseeing eyes.

Not even when he apologizes does she flinch, because it hasn't failed, because it isn't finished. ]

Try again.
