NEW HATCHES

YOU WAKE UP and suddenly you're a different person. No. That's not right. You're you and there's no suddenly about it. It's been a while, hasn't it? It feels like waking up from a very deep, extended sleep or like surfacing up from the darkness of the ocean and right there in your own head there's something both familiar and strange. You know intuitively that you've been unconscious for more than just a blink of the eye. While it’s impossible to tell exactly how long ago or how exactly you escaped the danger that had been breathing down your neck, you're certain it was more than a moment ago.

But here you are, a small miracle of the multiverse: lying in a small faintly hexagonal chamber, a gentle white light emanating from the surrounding walls. If you were injured during your escape, those injuries have been healed. If you were anxious or frightened or distraught, those feelings have been briefly calmed. There's something strangely peaceful about waking up here. That feeling persists even as you find the tube running from the base of your neck to the compartment's rear wall.

But once the tube's disconnected? Things get loud. A wave of emotion fills that peaceful void - fear, uncertainty, relief, a sense of purpose or loneliness or anxiety. Maybe some of these emotions are yours, but they can't all be. After the initial sensory overload, the mental buzz elongates: stretches out into a murmur like the sound of a party happening behind a closed door.

You can sit up - barely -, and shift out of the pod. There’s a ladder at your feet and a little cubby just before it with anything you brought with you as well as a set of crisp, loose-fitting white clothes; while your injuries are healed, whatever you’re wearing is in the exact state it was before. Maybe it's time for a change? Drop down the ladder to the floor of the Nesting Deck and you’ll find you’re not alone. The closer you are to these stranger, the louder the sound in your head becomes. --Actually they're not quite strangers either, are they? Something is wound about and between you and these people, whoever they are, are as familiar as this place you've never been is.

Welcome to Station 72. The air buzzes with activity. Somewhere deep in the Station, other minds call to yours. They are bright, brilliantly celebratory spots in your subconscious. They are sun-warm gentle, or they are fire and the taste of ash, or they are a vibrant frenetic whirl, or they are a tangled garden, or they are the feeling of flight through dense cirrus clouds. No two links are exactly the same, but you know for certain that you are connected to all of them in at least some small way.

Which is why it's easy to tell when something goes terribly wrong:

OLD HOSTS

THE ENDORPHIN RUSH of making it back to Station 72 (relatively) unharmed, having successfully acquired exactly what you'd set out to get your hands on can't be denied. Even if you're not necessarily the type to celebrate, there's no ignoring the thrumming celebratory sensation from those Hosts who are.

After a few hours of being back in the void, something else stirs in the air: the clear, prickling sensation of new hosts hatching on the Nesting Deck. They're a rush of mental information - as if someone's turned the volume on the radio all the way up -, a cacophony of sensation and emotional feedback for anyone unprepared to shield against it.

The swell of feeling might make it easy to miss what follows immediately after: the dull, gut-deep quiet as The Darkling, Chuuya Nakahara, and Nasu Rei go suddenly comatose.

((OOC Notes: This is the hatch log for all new hosts. Feel free to make your own logs and posts additional to this if you care do. You can find a more detailed overview of the hatching process HERE. II. Chestnuts

[ Aloy is wandering the halls of her new home (she tries not to think of it like that, but it's inevitable for a feeling of finality to creep into the back of her head) when she smells... something. Sniffing, she turns to follow the smell of cooking food. Earlier in the day she'd had the packaged stuff, which had been pretty good all things considered but now it was getting later and her stomach was rumbling at her again. She paused, sniffed the air again, and followed the scent into a room that was... brightly lit and decorated for some reason. Sam gets a bewildered stare and then something of a smile as confusion melts into amusement and good cheer. ]

Something smelled good, so I followed my nose.

[ Sam'd felt the arrival of new people, and he'd taken care to make sure his shields are up at full strength. He remembers how hard it was waking up to the noise of the Nest with only a handful of others on the Station - he doesn't want to know what it must be like to do it with all of them there. So his mind is quiet and calm, trying not to add to the chaos, and there's nothing but a hint of warmth to the ever present hum of the symbiote link.

Her small smile is met with one of his own. ]

Have anything you want, I made all this to share. [ His smile turns slightly wry. ] Not that great of a welcome to the weirdness of this place, I guess, but Merry Christmas anyway.

[ The man's presence is comforting, almost. Some sort of calm in this roiling sea of disparate emotions that won't just shut up. She nods at him and moves towards the table to peer at the food on display. None of it looks familiar. She wrinkles her nose, though not out of distaste. There are so many choices and she doesn't know any of them. She turns back towards Sam. ]

Christmas? What's Christmas?

[ He spots that nose wrinkling, and can't help but give a little bit of a grin. It doesn't take a mental link to figure out she's unsure about it, and he's about to point out which ones are sweet and which are savory and ask if that helps when she questions him about Christmas. ]

It's a holiday back where I'm from. I can tell you about it if you want, but I won't take it personal if you'd rather just grab something to eat and go back to figuring out what the hell this place is.

What's it all about? Why celebrate today?

[ Holiday. Okay, makes sense. She bobs her head in a brief nod and finally picks up a cookie. She sniffs it for a moment before taking a small bite. In an instant, a smile blooms on her face. ]

It's sweet!

[ She chows down hurriedly, looking exactly like the very hungry teenager she is. ]

It'f good!

[ She speaks around a full mouth, a bit of cheer blooming through the mental link. A bit of a happy surprise in this strange place. ]
sizeofyourbaggage: (this is charming right)

[personal profile] sizeofyourbaggage 2017-05-14 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah? Have as many as you want.

[ Though there's things other than cookies that he should probably be steering her towards if she's as hungry as she seems, but it's hard to argue with a reaction like that. He smiles at her, a touch more warmth entering his side of the mental link. ]

It's normally in winter. But it's hard to keep track of time here the same way we do back home, and I'm pretty sure I missed it. Might as well do it now, while we've got the time. There's a lot of fun traditions and legends to it, but when you get down to it, it's about spending time with the people you care about. Family dinners, getogethers with friends, gift exchanges, all of that.

[ Aloy takes two more cookies which she easily stuffs into her mouth and then takes a couple more for later. She wanders over to the other table to pick at the other food that's up for taking. ]

That sounds... nice.

[ She's wistful. She's never had much in the way of family and thinking of Rost is still painful. His loss is still so near and raw, even with all that's happened since he died. ]
sizeofyourbaggage: (what're you thinking now)

[personal profile] sizeofyourbaggage 2017-05-24 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
[ There’s something to be said of the mental link - if he wasn’t shielded so tight, he’d be able to pick up more behind that wistful tone, figure out if she’s missing something she’s had or longing for something she hasn’t.

But he hadn’t needed it to be able to relate to people back home, and he’s determined not to get to the point of relying on it now. ]

You have any winter holidays back home?
huntsmachines: (sunlight)

[personal profile] huntsmachines 2017-06-02 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
I mean... we had the feast on the winter solstice. We--

[ They. She had only been able to watch and do small things with Rost. Not the great celebration the tribe held. ]

We eat a lot of food and light lamps, candles and fires all night to drive away darkness and prepare for the return of spring.
sizeofyourbaggage: (looking forward)

[personal profile] sizeofyourbaggage 2017-06-08 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds nice. Sounds like the kind of thing that Christmas has its roots in, actually.

[ Religious holidays aren't something Sam knows a lot about, but his father'd been a minister, and he still remembers when he was a kid and his father encouraged him to do his own research. ]

Did you have a favorite part?

[ So they can try to recreate it here, he means, but he doesn't want to get her hopes up if they can't. ]
huntsmachines: (downcast)

[personal profile] huntsmachines 2017-06-08 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I... guess? I never really got to take part.

[ And it was rare she and Rost had enough to spare for a feast, though sometimes they'd been able to have a good meal, at the least. And they could make a large fire and Rost could sometimes be induced to tell stories. ]
sizeofyourbaggage: (what're you thinking now)

[personal profile] sizeofyourbaggage 2017-06-08 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
[ Oh. Now he gets that when she'd said "we," she really meant "they." There's a soft, wordless question that travels across the mental link, but then he quirks a little smile at her. ]

You don't gotta tell me about it if you don't want to. [ He pushes a dish of meat and vegetables towards her. ] I don't know the traditions - but we got a ton of food, and plenty of things to light on fire.
huntsmachines: (smirk)

[personal profile] huntsmachines 2017-06-08 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Aloy returns the smile. There's something a little comforting about it. The sympathy is welcome in small doses, though she doesn't expect anyone to really understand. ]

It's what happens when you grow up as an Outcast.

[ Food? Food! She pulls the plate over and begins to dig in using her fingers without hesitation. Who needs a for? ]

I think just the food will be fine. Thanks, though.

[ She may be an Outcast - whatever that is, and he kind of wants to ask, except that it sounds like it's a long and not exactly happy story - but she reacts to food just like most of the teenagers he knows. ...and the soldiers, but he's not sure that's an apt comparison.

He grins as he leans on the counter a little, grabbing a piece of vegetable with his own fingers and munching on it. What the hell, who needs a fork. ]

Food it is. I'm Sam, by the way.

[ Aloy eats voraciously. Who knows where the next meal will come from and it tastes pretty good, all things considered. Definitely more heavily seasoned than she's used to, but it's still good! ]

Mmf. 'm Aloy!
