[ Elliot's mind flinches, shying away like a skittish horse, and for a moment they fall out of contact all together, or as much as anyone can in the Mest. But he has no effective barriers, no defense, and she's right there, so commingling again is pretty inevitable. ]

( dub her perceptive, or call sharing a mental bubble with rust an eye-opening experience, but elliot's unsubtle evasion is telling. more than enough to jumpstart bitter disapproval leaking across the bridge of their thoughts. clarke is quiet for a beat, still; debating getting involved and overinvested. but that hadn't worked out so well last time, and instead, she returns to lacing her shoes. )

( a careful, considerate pause. that brand of bitter tastes familiar, although clarke's thought on her missing broodmates had been — sad. curious. they'd never met, she didn't have names to assign to the absent tug at the back of her conscious. it had been difficult to come to terms with, and learning to accept feeling lonely when surrounded by people would never be comfortable.

( a brighter hue of distaste colors her thoughts, bleeding across the link with absolutely no attempt to stopper it. bright and bold, one last piercing look without the two of them making eye contact. there's a tangible moment of consideration, taking in the scope of what elliot allows of himself to be seen, teetering between defiantly pushing her agenda — perhaps even picking across rocks to confront him in person — and just walking away. but taking into account how well attempting to pry rust from his bottle had gone, going down this road again isn't exactly inviting.

she doesn't know this man well. they aren't so tethered together as to be unable to discern where one stopped and the other began. and in the scheme of picking her battles, clarke just doesn't care. (or does, but doesn't want to.) )
