[ A few hours after the murder, she hasn't blown the ship up, and here they are. Another knock knock on everyone's brain: ]

[ Maybe you're here because she bullied you, maybe you want to soak - maybe you're the poor bastard that is standing guard at the door. Either way, welcome to the Suana, have fun. Or don't. ]

[ He doesn't have to wait long; it takes Mat about half a second to realize he can't get anything out of that answer. Instead of being deterred, he rolls his eyes, sinking a bit more into the pool. Annoyance is enough of a distraction to take his mind off mechanical fish and help him relax, apparently. ]

And I'm from the Blasted bloody Lands. You know what I meant.

[ Except Mat isn't even completely sure what he meant, frankly, so just in case: ] What world?

[Maybe he does know what he means. What anyone means when they ask that, looking for a way to pin you down, apply their understanding of a culture of a place to your personality and behaviour, beliefs.

Richard doubts world is going to be much better than city, so he raises his eyebrows, gives the next answer in much the same tone.]

Earth.

[ The word isn't met by a rush of familiarity, but it isn't a complete blank, either. He's seen bits of Earth, memories shared from other sources — from Clarke's messy thoughts, from Misato's pointed attempts to help him understand.

Meaning all he's seen of it is a world torn up, desolate, harsh. That doesn't completely match up with the man sitting in front of him, and he sounds bemused when he asks: ]

The one that's been blown to pieces?

[There's an immediate spike of denial, a lingering remnant of coming from a planet where the idea of a multiverse was just a theory. A kneejerk instinct that hasn't yet been influenced by the accepted truth of the new situation. It means there's a beat of silence; less surprise, more just necessity.]

Not yet. [Amused himself, maybe. It makes sense there's Earths that has happened to. It's never been outside the realm of possibility - more firmly in the realm of inevitability.] World powers are probably still working towards it, but I stopped paying attention when preventing hell from rising got added to my to do list.
