mental link; day 49/50ish

[ Sam's... not normally one to use the mental link to talk to the Nest in general; he still prefers in person most of the time. But the only other option he can think of for something like this is to stick up flyers, so mental link it is. With his widened connection comes the feeling of feathers and a distance rush of wind. ]

( For those of you who don't know me - I'm Sam. I'm one of the people you can find spending half the day in the training hall. I know a lot of us have got our own training routine, but I'm looking to step outside mine a little.

Guess you could call this an interest check, see who'd be up for doing some training in working together. I know everyone ain't into the team thing and I'm not asking you to be, if you don't want to. Just looking for the willing. We're all doing missions together, it'd be nice to have some practice seeing how our skills can compliment each other.

Not gonna drop my resume on people who ain't interested, but I'll answer any questions you want about my experience. Or you can find me in the training hall every morning. )

[ There's an instinctive urge to bristle a little, to defend it even though he technically went rogue - and, in all honesty, probably doesn't even have his rank any more. He resists, though, and perks up a little when she says doctor. ]

( Veteran. I retired a while back, went to work at the VA. Then I was with a more... global team. No agenda but going where we were needed. ) [ Superheroes are kind of hard to explain. ] ( Medical doctor? Because damn, that'd be awesome. )

[Warm interest is followed by a humming sense of confirmation before she answers, gentle amusement curling around her words.]

( Yes. Among other things. )

[ That interest is returned, and Sam's curiosity is definitely piqued. ]

( You up for meeting in person? We don't have much in the way of a medical team here and I'd love to talk about coordinating. )

[ Among other things, anyway. ]

( Of course. I've always preferred to have my conversations face-to-face. )

[Much more civilized. Perhaps she's still just a little bit old fashioned.]

( Have you often had need of a medical team? )

[The Station has seemed relatively quiet in the time since she's been here. She'd like to know what to expect when it isn't.]

( You and me both, sister, it ain't the same otherwise. Rec area okay with you? )

[ He's not necessarily old fashioned so much as he is... used to being able to read body language and facial expression and feel the atmosphere of a situation. Can't get that over the links unless he pries, and he's not willing to look in people's heads. ]

( On missions, sometimes, yeah. We lost a couple people, before I got here and one right after. )

[It's an answer she'd been expecting and yet... ]

( I'm sorry to hear that.

The rec area will be fine. I can meet you there. )

( So was I. )

[ This last mission might not have gone exactly as planned, but at least no one died. There's a hum of confirmation across their mental link before he heads towards the rec area, keeping their connection open just wide enough that he'll be able to recognize her when he sees her. ]

[Helen has a better grasp of the station now, but she's still a minute or two behind him. Though she tries to keep most of her thoughts to herself, there's a weight to her presence she doesn't seem to mask well. It comes with a certainty she's older than she looks and has seen more than she'll ever admit.]

Sam? It's good to put a face to the... [She gestures vaguely toward her temple.]

[ There's something familiar about the depth to her side of the mental link - it almost reminds him of Damon, and to a lesser extent Bucky, both with so many more years than they seem to have. Sam's not gonna pry about it, but it's definitely something he files away.

For now, he gives a friendly smile. ]

Yeah, I know what you mean. How long've you been here?

[ She's finding days spent on the station tend to run together, so it takes her a moment to answer. ]

A little over a week. Not nearly long enough to grow accustomed to this arrangement.

[ Something suggests she also adapts more easily than she'll claim, but there's enough truth in her words. ]
