❰ damon hasn't felt anything like this in... well, ever, really. beyond the novelty of the mental link making it a brand new sensation, there's also the fact that... no one has ever loved him like this before. his mother loved him, he's fairly certain, though never as much as she did stefan. stefan was his best friend, but his affection was the blind love of a child for their favourite caretaker. katherine... katherine doesn't even bear thinking about.

no one has ever made him feel like this before, is the point.

when elena breaks the kiss just to hold onto him, damon takes in a shaky breath, wrapping his arms around her waist. his eyes he keeps closed — it'd be too much to look at her, right now, all of this is too much, and he might accept that feelings aren't the worst, but that doesn't mean damon wants to cry in front of anyone. not even elena. he leans their foreheads together, content to just be with her for a moment, before — ❱

Are you crying?

❰ damon opens his eyes, blinking at elena for a second, before he smiles and reaches up to brush a tear off her cheek. ❱

And here I was trying to make you stop doing that.

[ Elena has spent her life being loved. It's not a fact that she's oblivious to - she's seen other families that were broken and haphazardly taped back together, that didn't know how to express affection for each other. That had never been the Gilberts; her childhood had been filled with kindness and laughter, and an unshakable feeling of being truly loved.

Stefan loved her, and she loved him. Even though they'd grown apart, she would always love him and he would forever be a part of her soul. He had lifted her out of the darkness and been exactly what she needed after the death of her parents, but... people change. They grow and become different, have different needs, and the person she needs now--is Damon. ]

It's good crying, I promise.

[ She leans into his touch like a flower turning toward the sun, and she needs him just as much. He's her anchor in this place, and his presence is the most comforting thing she's felt in weeks. ]

❰ the words are gentle, teasing, and damon kisses elena's forehead to soften any bruised feelings such a thing might engender. elena is given much more to tears than pretty much anyone else he knows — bar stefan, maybe. his brother can blubber with the best of them. ❱

Kinda pissed being on Planet Sneaks McVeilseverywhere means I can't take you on a date.


❰ this is 100% something damon has thought of before, and he definitely knows just where he'd take her if they were in mystic falls. now? he's got nothin. ❱

[ Coming from someone else, that jibe might bother her. From Damon? After all they've been through together? She doesn't even roll her eyes. He knows that when she cries, there's meaning behind it - she's not someone who cries at nothing or uses it to get pity from others. She cries because she feels too much, because of pain and heartache, because of sheer joy that she hasn't felt in so long. If he wanted to hurt her with his words about it, he very easily could, but she knows that's not what he's doing now. ]

And if we weren't here? What kind of plans would you have for me, Damon Salvatore?

[ She can't even begin to imagine what dates with Damon would be like, but she's disappointed that they won't find out for themselves. At least, not anytime soon. ]

At home I'd take you to Richmond. There's a fancy little Italian place with eggplant parmesan that you'd love, and a shitty art theatre. We could pretend to watch pretentious French movies and throw popcorn at hipsters from the back row.

❰ because actually watching the movie while damon translated would be too cliche, obviously. ❱

Back on the Station... I don't know. I'd figure something out. It creates rooms, right, I'll bully it into making something interesting.

[ A smile blooms into existence at Damon's description of their would-be date, the one they might never have but that she wants desperately. It sounds nothing like what she would have experienced with Stefan, or Matt, and that's why it sounds perfect. Outside the Elena box, perhaps, but all the more special for it. ]

I didn't really get to see much of the Station before we were brought down here.

[ Between waking up with an alien in her head and Lakshmi's attempt at killing her, it had all been a bit too much. That first day had been spent hiding, trying to keep her fear and panic, and her hunger, to herself. Likewise, she tries to keep these thoughts to herself, but she and Damon are too connected to have much success in her attempt. Images and emotions leak through and she looks away for a moment to try to collect herself. ]

We'll have to make that trip to Richmond when we get home. It sounds really nice.

❰ damon would say it's well within the elena box, she just doesn't know it yet. there's so much about herself elena has been denying or avoiding in order to make sure her friends still love her, and he can't wait to see what she gets up to now that that's no longer a consideration. elena is a wild, passionate person, tempered by her empathy, and it's about time she lets loose. ❱

It's not all that special, you weren't missing much.

❰ he can see the turn her thoughts have taken, can feel the slow sinking dread in her stomach, and before he's thought about it too much he dips his head to kiss her again, trying to distract. their world doesn't begin and end with lakshmi's vendetta, and he won't allow elena to ruin good moments with thoughts of her. ❱

It's a date, ❰ he murmurs against her lips, smiling. ❱

[ Living her life according to the expectations of others is what Elena does, and she doesn't even realize it. When she gives it serious though, it might occur to her, but otherwise... All she sees is not wanting to disappoint people, and an obligation to be what others see her as. If that means denying herself things she wants, adopting the hopes and dreams of someone else as her own, then that's just what she does. She puts herself last and never really stops to consider it.

Except that here she doesn't have to. Not in this moment, here with Damon. She gives in to what she wants and falls into that kiss, all thoughts of her broodmate sinking back into the darkest part of the deep ocean in her mind. ]

I look forward to it. [ She returns that smile, wrapping her arms around him again, never wanting to let go. ]
